August 29, 2017 — Today, Americans for Responsible Solutions, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and retired NASA astronaut Captain Mark Kelly, and the New Mexico Coalition for Common Sense, issued the below statements following the tragic shooting yesterday in Clovis that left two people dead and four injured.
Don Schreiber, Owner, Devil’s Spring Ranch, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the New Mexico Coalition for Common Sense:
“The last thing anyone in our community should fear is the possibility of being shot, whether at a library, movie theater, school or church. But, sadly, fear now walks our New Mexico streets. We need to support those harmed by this tragedy, tell our leaders to turn grief into responsible action, and make New Mexico communities safer for us all.”
Marco Serna, District Attorney, First Judicial District, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the New Mexico Coalition for Common Sense:
“In the past three months, our state has experienced not one, but two mass shootings. We must not accept these vicious acts of violence as normal. As a state, and as a country, I hope we can come together and work together to make our communities safer so no other community has to undergo another senseless gun tragedy like the one that occurred yesterday in Clovis.”
Miranda Viscoli, Co-President, New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the New Mexico Coalition for Common Sense:
“I am horrified and heartbroken by the shooting at Clovis–Carver Public Library. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. I am hoping for a quick and complete recovery for those who were shot. The tragedy witnessed yesterday is incomprehensible and, as with all gun violence, completely avoidable.”
