Giffords Endorses Congressman Adam Smith for Congress in Washington

The endorsement comes as part of Giffords’ #VoteCourage Campaign to elect gun reform candidates nationwide

August 3, 2018 — Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, announced its endorsement of Congressman Adam Smith for reelection in Washington’s ninth congressional district.

Congressman Adam Smith is the highest-ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee and is committed to taking action to save lives from gun violence. He is a co-sponsor of bipartisan legislation to expand background checks and close dangerous loopholes. He also voted against the gun lobby’s concealed carry reciprocity legislation last year. With his words and his actions, Congressman Smith has shown that he stands with the people of his district who are calling for stronger gun laws.

“My dear friend Adam Smith has repeatedly stood up to the gun lobby in Congress, raised his voice to say now is the time to address America’s gun violence crisis, and championed legislation that will save lives,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of Giffords. “When I served with Adam on the House Armed Services Committee we worked together every day to keep our nation safe and support our servicemembers. He’s always brought that dedication to gun violence prevention and we are proud to endorse Adam for re-election because he is committed to protecting Washingtonians and all communities across the country. Together we will pass solutions that will keep our schools, streets, churches, and neighborhoods safe.”

Giffords’ #VoteCourage campaign is aimed at electing gun safety advocates to Congress and defeating politicians who have historically worked against gun reform, or done nothing at all to prevent gun violence. The political program targets incumbents in mostly suburban districts and uses a mixture of TV and digital advertising, on-the-ground organizing, and a voter registration push to create momentum for meaningful progress on gun safety.
