Governor Dan McKee believes that every Rhode Islander deserves to feel safe in their home, their school, and everywhere in between. In his first two years in office he’s done everything he can to ensure that’s the case, but he knows there is more work to be done. Addressing the gun violence epidemic requires strong collaboration and urgent leadership, and Governor McKee has proven he’s up to the task. 
 
Immediately after the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, Governor McKee renewed his call for the Rhode Island General Assembly to pass additional commonsense gun safety measures. Although he does not have legislative power, Governor McKee worked tirelessly alongside lawmakers and advocates to take quick and meaningful action to reduce gun violence. He has signed legislation that banned high-capacity magazines, raised the age to purchase firearms to 21, and banned the open carry rifles and shotguns. In a full term, he will continue to work with lawmakers to pass an assault weapons ban and keep weapons of war off of our streets. 
 
Governor McKee knows that Rhode Islanders’ safety cannot wait, and he has shown leadership on gun safety when it mattered most. He is exactly the leader and gun violence prevention champion that Rhode Island needs. We’re proud to support him in this fight, and we know he’ll continue to work to save countless lives from gun violence.
