Former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer represents Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District and has served more than 20 terms in Congress. First inspired to get into politics by the Civil Rights Movement and the legacy of President John F. Kennedy, Leader Hoyer has long been an advocate for positive, progressive change. At just 27 years old, he won a seat representing Prince George’s County in the Maryland State Senate—and by age 35, he became the youngest state senate president in Maryland’s history. In 1981, Leader Hoyer won his seat in Congress in a special election, and he has spent every day since fighting to protect the health and safety of his constituents.
Throughout his time in public service, Leader Hoyer has earned a reputation for effectiveness. In the 1990s, he was an original co-sponsor of the Violence Against Women Act, and in subsequent years, he has worked within the Democratic Caucus and across the aisle with Republicans to secure the passage of groundbreaking legislation to address America’s epidemic of gun violence, including the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. He knows that our nation’s lax gun laws put too many lives at risk, and he’s been a strong supporter of legislation to expand background checks to all gun sales, incentivize the safe storage of firearms, ban bump stocks, fund community violence intervention programs and lifesaving gun violence research, and remove dangerous weapons from the hands of those exhibiting signs of wanting to harm themselves or others.
Leader Hoyer continues to work hard every day to keep Americans safe. With so much on the line this fall, we need to make sure to reelect leaders who are ready to swiftly pass the legislative fixes needed to end gun violence next term—and we know Leader Steny Hoyer can get the job done. With him helping guide a new generation of leaders in Washington DC to pass meaningful gun safety laws, we can retake our gun safety majority and make real change once again in 2025.
