Former Assemblywoman Christy Smith is a fierce supporter of commonsense gun safety reforms with a proven track record of success. In 2018, she unseated a Republican incumbent in one of her state’s most competitive legislative races to win a seat in the California State Assembly. In office, she worked closely with her constituents and law enforcement to create safer communities—now, she’s running for Congress to replicate that work on the national stage.
As a mother, Smith understands the anxiety that parents across the country face when they send their children to school each day, as well as the traumatizing effects that active shooter drills can have on kids in the classroom. In 2019, her community endured a tragic shooting at Saugus High School, which claimed the lives of two young students. In the aftermath, Smith sprang into action to support local families and mobilize resources to those in need. She also supported lifesaving efforts to reform the process for selling semiautomatic rifles and to strengthen gun violence restraining orders (GVROs) in the legislature. In Congress, she will continue working to make the country safer by fighting for comprehensive reforms like implementing universal background checks, banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, and creating federal extreme risk protection order laws that allow families to ask courts to take guns away from those who are a danger to themselves and others.
Smith correctly believes that everyone has the right to live without the fear of gun violence, and she will never stop fighting until that goal is a reality for every man, woman, and child. In 2020, she came within 350 votes of winning this seat and ousting a corrupt NRA-backed Republican from office. Success is not impossible—Democrats held this district as recently as 2019, and we can and must flip it back this fall. With Christy Smith in office, Southern Californians can finally have a gun safety champion fighting on their behalf in Washington DC once again.
