Representative David Cicilline has been an unparalleled leader in the fight to pass gun safety laws at both the state and federal level. Prior to his election to Congress, Representative Cicilline served as the mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, for eight years and as a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives for four terms. He helped found Mayors Against Illegal Guns and implemented measures that reduced the crime rate in his city to its lowest level in more than 40 years.
After his successful tenure serving Rhode Islanders at the state and local levels, Representative Cicilline brought a renewed passion for gun safety to the US House of Representatives, where he now serves as vice chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. He has been the lead sponsor of some of the strongest gun violence prevention bills ever to be introduced, including the Assault Weapons Ban and multiple pieces of legislation to prevent individuals who are a danger to themselves or others from purchasing a firearm. Representative Cicilline has consistently fought to close the ghost guns loophole by introducing legislation like the Untraceable Firearms Act, and he has led efforts to alert law enforcement when a prohibited purchaser obtains a firearm through a default sale.
Over the years, he has penned several bills to enact extreme risk protection orders, research gun violence prevention strategies, keep guns out of the hands of criminals, and prevent gun dealers from converting their firearms inventory into a “personal inventory” in order to avoid having to perform background checks on customers. In 2016, Representative Cicilline also worked with members to organize the first ever member sit-in on the House floor to demand that Republican leadership bring gun safety measures to a vote in the wake of countless mass shootings.
Rhode Islanders have a champion like no other in Representative Cicilline, and he has proven time and again that he will never give up the fight to end gun violence until every family in his district can live their lives free from senseless violence. As rates of violence spike across the country and with our gun safety House majority on the line, it is more important than ever that gun safety champions like Representative David Cicilline are reelected to another term this fall.
