Throughout her career, Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz has built a solid record as a gun safety champion. Like so many others, her home state of Florida has suffered horrific instances of gun violence in recent years—from daily shootings in its major cities to devastating mass casualty incidents like those at Pulse nightclub in Orlando and at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Representative Wasserman Schultz knows that no single law will prevent every tragedy, but she believes that smart, sustained, coordinated measures will help curb gun violence and solve this deadly public health crisis.

Representative Wasserman Schultz is committed to protecting the safety and liberty of Floridians. She has advocated for a ban on the sale of large-capacity magazines and for the passage of legislation to close background check loopholes that allow dangerous individuals to evade the law and purchase deadly firearms. She knows our students should not have to put their lives at risk to seek an education, and has proudly worked to introduce the Ammunition Background Check Act, commonly referred to as Jaime’s Law. This legislation would help stop illegal purchases of ammunition and was named in honor of Jaime Guttenberg, one of the 17 students and staff members who lost their lives in 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida—just north of the congresswoman’s district. Representative Wasserman Schultz also knows that we need more data to adequately protect our schools, and worked to introduce the School Shooting Safety and Preparedness Act. This bill would establish a federal definition for school shootings, create a federal framework for collecting and sharing data, and establish regular reporting requirements on these types of tragedies. In 2022, she also joined colleagues on both sides to pass the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which was the first major gun safety bill signed into law in nearly 30 years.

Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz has been a friend and ally to our founder, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, for years—and we know she will never stop fighting to protect the children and families she represents. This fall, we must make sure to send her back to Washington DC, where we know she will continue to get results that will save lives across Florida.
