Louisiana has no law requiring a background check on the purchaser of a firearm when the seller is not a licensed dealer. Louisiana law does, however, prohibit knowingly making a firearm available to a patient of a mental institution.((La. Rev. Stat. § 28:183.)) It is also unlawful to give, sell, donate, lend, deliver or otherwise transfer a firearm to a person knowing him or her to be a convicted felon.((La. Rev. Stat. § 14:95.1.1.))

The only other Louisiana laws governing such sales are those addressing the minimum age of the purchaser.
