Statement by Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords on the Passing of Arizona’s First Female Governor Rose Mofford

September 15, 2016— Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords released the following statement today mourning the passing of former Arizona Governor Rose Mofford, the first woman to lead the state as governor. Congresswoman Giffords’ statement:

“Long before many Arizonans knew the incredible significance of the words ‘glass ceiling,’ Rose Mofford was shattering it. “As Arizona’s first woman governor and in her service to our state for decades afterward, Governor Mofford always fought for fairness, responsibility, and common sense. During a hard time for our state, she brought steadiness and honor. “She was also an Arizonan through and through: Tough, pragmatic, and determined. Our great state is better off thanks to her and her tireless public service. “As she did so many other women in Arizona, Rose inspired me to run for office and to serve my community. I will always be grateful to her for that. “Today, I am holding Governor Mofford’s loved ones in my thoughts, and I join the rest of my fellow Arizonans in mourning the loss of an iconic Arizonan.”
