Giffords Reacts to President Trump’s White House Meeting with Members of Congress on Gun Violence

February 28, 2018 — Today, Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, responded to President Trump’s meeting at the White House on gun violence with members of Congress from both parties.

Peter Ambler, Giffords Executive Director:

“In the aftermath of the tragic shooting in Parkland, Florida, we have seen overwhelming calls to action from every corner of this country on the issue of gun violence. What’s unprecedented about this momentum is that it’s being driven by the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Their bravery and courage in the face of such terror and heartbreak should be a model for every American. Today we saw the president give his support to many of the policies that we have long advocated for, including background checks on every gun sale and extreme risk protection orders. Congressional Republicans have everything they need to pass these bipartisan proposals and send them to President Trump’s desk. If there is no movement, the only possible excuse will be that these elected officials are more interested in protecting the interests of the corporate gun lobby than in saving the lives of children.”
