STATEMENT: Giffords Applauds Governor Phil Murphy For Executive Order to Provide Public Information on Gun Crimes and Sources of Weapons

April 6, 2018 — Today, Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, applauded Governor Phil Murphy for signing an executive order to provide the public with reports on gun crimes and the sources of the weapons being used in these crimes.

“For decades, Congress has done the gun lobby’s bidding by squashing any attempt to conduct federal research into the public health problem that is gun violence. In a breath of fresh air, Governor Murphy decided to take the lead and listen to the people of New Jersey by signing this executive order,” said David Chipman, Senior Policy Advisor of Giffords. “I expect more states to implement proactive measures as a result of Congressional silence because every day too many people fall victim to gunfire. Our law enforcement officials and public servants need research to most effectively understand how to help communities and keep them safer. This example of courage should be followed by others.”
