Giffords Endorses Dianne Feinstein for Reelection to U.S. Senate
The endorsement comes as part of Giffords’ #VoteCourage Campaign to elect gun reform candidates nationwide
May 30, 2018 — Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, announced its endorsement of Senator Dianne Feinstein’s reelection campaign for Senate in California.
Senator Feinstein was an early leader in the fight to make American communities safer from gun violence. Shortly after being elected to the United States Senate in 1992, she authored the assault weapons ban legislation that was signed into law in 1994. And Senator Feinstein has not stopped fighting for safer communities since; she has been a stalwart champion for gun safety, tirelessly standing up to the gun lobby, shedding light on their influence, and challenging their policy agenda.
“Dianne experienced the horror of a shooting first hand, and, like me, she has dedicated much of her career to fighting gun violence,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. “Dianne has already fought the NRA – and won. Her passion, leadership, and courage will be critical for our next victories in Congress in addressing the nation’s gun violence crisis.”
“I’m honored to receive the support of Giffords, whose leadership and courage serve as inspiration to me and people across our country,” said Senator Feinstein. When I first arrived in the Senate, I was told the NRA was too powerful. But we passed the only assault weapons ban in our nation’s history. Today, we’re seeing new momentum as millions of Americans and a new generation demand an end to the carnage and the passage of common sense gun laws. I look forward to working with Giffords to pass a new assault weapons ban and get dangerous weapons of war off our streets.”
Giffords’ #VoteCourage campaign aims to elect gun safety advocates to Congress and defeat politicians who have historically worked against gun reform, or done nothing at all to prevent gun violence. The political program targets incumbents in mostly suburban districts and uses a mixture of TV and digital advertising, on-the-ground organizing, and a voter registration push to create momentum for meaningful progress on gun safety.
