Giffords Law Center Applauds New Jersey Attorney General for Leadership on Dangerous Downloadable Guns
Attorney General Grewal Demands Self-Described Anarchist Refrain from Posting Internet Files That Anyone, Anywhere Can Use to Create Do-It-Yourself Guns with 3D Printers
July 26, 2018—Today, Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence commended New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal for taking bold leadership to ensure that a Texas company, Defense Distributed, does not post online blueprints for 3D-printed guns that pose a severe threat to public safety. For years, the company has been prohibited from making these blueprints publicly available online because they could arm dangerous criminals and terrorists with untraceable firearms. Late last month, however, the Trump Administration reversed course on this public safety and national security issue by deciding, with no explanation, to allow Defense Distributed to begin posting the computer files online. The company has stated that it intends to post the files beginning next week on August 1. Attorney General Grewal’s bold actions today are aimed at stopping the company from carrying out this dangerous plan.
Adam Skaggs, Chief Counsel of Giffords Law Center, released the following statement:
“While the Trump Administration has abandoned public safety in delivering everything on the gun lobby’s wish list, New Jersey’s Attorney General has shown leadership when it comes to keeping our communities safe from gun violence. If you can’t pass a background check, you should not be able to download and print a gun for personal use. Downloadable guns don’t have serial numbers and can’t be traced by law enforcement. And when they are made with plastic, 3D-printed guns can’t be detected by traditional security systems and can be smuggled onto an airplane or other high-security environments. We need to stop the threat of downloadable guns in its tracks, and Attorney General Grewal has taken an important step toward doing just that.”
