Giffords Endorses Steve Sisolak for Governor in Nevada

The endorsement comes as part of the Giffords #VoteCourage Campaign to elect gun reform candidates nationwide

October 24, 2018 — Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, announced its endorsement of Steve Sisolak for governor in Nevada.

Just over one year ago, on October 1st, 2017, fifty-eight people were murdered, and hundreds more injured in the worst mass shooting in American history, highlighting the inadequacies of both Nevada’s and our nation’s gun laws. Steve Sisolak has promised to fight for stronger gun laws like universal background checks and banning bump stocks, policies that we know will save lives. His opponent refuses to enforce the background checks law approved by Nevadan voters in 2016 and even received the endorsement from the National Rifle Association for his actions. Steve Sisolak is the champion Nevadans need to stand up to the gun lobby and keep us safe.

Statement from former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of Giffords:

“America experienced three of the deadliest mass shootings in modern history in a five month span. Over 38,000 people in our country were killed by a gun in 2016. Nevada has not been immune to this deadly crisis—somebody is killed by a gun in the state every 21 hours. Steve understands the toll this epidemic takes on Nevada communities.

“We are endorsing Steve today because he acknowledges the heartbreak gun violence causes in his state, and he is working to stop it. His leadership will be critical for our next victories in Nevada to prevent future tragedies. Giffords is proud to back Steve Sisolak, who has the courage to stand up to the corporate gun lobby.”

The Giffords #VoteCourage campaign aims to elect gun safety advocates to local, state, and federal office and defeat politicians who have historically worked against gun reform, or done nothing at all to prevent gun violence.
