Gun Safety Wins in Colorado; Gabrielle Giffords Congratulates Jason Crow

November 6, 2018 – Today, Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, congratulated Jason Crow for winning in Colorado’s 6th Congressional District.

“This year, Jason Crow dared to imagine an America where gun violence wasn’t normal and people didn’t have to live in fear, wondering if today was the day they would have to duck under a desk or hide in a closet. Jason stood tall and boldly declared that the gun lobby is no longer welcome here, and their influence over our politicians is a thing of the past. Communities in Colorado responded to this message of courage and hope by electing Jason to office. Today marks the dawn of a new era for gun safety in America.

“Jason made it clear that once elected, he would fight for laws proven to keep guns out of dangerous hands and save lives. As a former Army ranger who served his country during multiple tours in Afghanistan, Jason speaks from experience. On the campaign trail, he listened to the concerns of voters who don’t understand how we can live in a country where nearly 100 lives are lost to gunfire each day. Jason promised to bring what he heard to the halls of power, and now he will.

“Jason’s election is a testament to the strength of people who stood up and marched, who spoke up and said enough. Jason harnessed this new energy and pointed out that politicians had failed in their basic moral responsibility to keep us safe. His election is proof that we don’t have to tolerate inaction on gun safety in a country where guns cause daily heartbreak and horror. We congratulate Jason Crow on his victory tonight and look forward to working with him in the months to come as we fight to make our schools, streets, and communities safer.”

Jason Crow was a part of the Giffords #VoteThemOut initiative. As a veteran who served in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and the 75th Ranger Regiment, Crow has called upon Congress to pass commonsense laws to reduce gun violence and block dangerous legislation like the regulation of firearm silencers. Giffords invested nearly $1.5 million in an ad campaign underscoring the stark choice on gun safety Colorado voters had with Jason Crow and his opponent, incumbent Mike Coffman. Coffman received more money from the NRA than any other member of Colorado’s congressional delegation since 2010, totaling over $33,000.

Giffords also campaigned for Crow along with VoteVets, as part of a joint effort to elect veteran candidates committed to implementing gun safety measures.
