Giffords Law Center Responds to Announcement that Supreme Court Will Take Up First Second Amendment Case Since Justice Kavanaugh’s Confirmation
The Court will hear a case challenging New York City’s gun licensing laws
January 22, 2019 — Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence responded to an announcement that the Supreme Court will hear a case challenging New York City’s gun licensing laws. This will be the first Second Amendment case considered since Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined the Court.
Statement from Hannah Shearer, Second Amendment Litigation Director at Giffords Law Center:
“Today is a warning that we could see a new, more activist Supreme Court taking steps to limit gun safety laws at a time when the American people are demanding action to prevent gun violence. With a number of other gun safety cases in the pipeline, this is the first signal that Justice Kavanaugh may lead the Court to chip away at laws that have broad public support and were signed into law by leaders on both sides of the aisle. Today’s announcement involves a law that only applies in New York City, so the impact of any decision will be limited. But this moment is a reminder to the Supreme Court that eroding strong laws is out of step with the overwhelming majority of the American public who support measures to make our communities safer.”
