Giffords Endorses Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont for Reelection
Washington DC — Today, Giffords PAC, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, announced its endorsement of Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont for reelection.
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
“Connecticut residents unfortunately understand the deadly impacts of gun violence well, and over the past four years, Governor Ned Lamont has honored the lives lost to senseless tragedies across his state with action. He has been an unparalleled champion in the fight for gun safety while in office, and his work to bolster his state’s comprehensive gun laws has made Connecticut a national model for progress and change. During his first term, Governor Lamont strengthened legislation to keep guns out of the hands of those who wish to pose harm to themselves or others and led the push to pass Ethan’s Law—a piece of landmark legislation which would create stronger requirements for safe gun storage in residences where children are present.
“Earlier this month, the Supreme Court showed us how easily protections designed to keep Americans safe can be rolled back, and made it clear that having governors in office who will work to protect their constituents from harm is more important than ever. Connecticuters deserve a leader who will always put their safety first, and Ned Lamont is exactly that champion. We must reelect him this November.”
Governor Ned Lamont:
“I am honored and grateful to earn the endorsement of the Giffords PAC. Their efforts across the county have been absolutely vital to making our nation safer and reducing gun violence. I am proud of the work we’ve done to save lives and make our communities safer. During my administration, we updated our red flag laws and closed loopholes to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals, banned ‘ghost guns’ and worked with neighboring states to combat gun violence. And I’ll keep working every day so the people of Connecticut feel safe at work, at school, and everywhere they travel in our state.”
Governor Ned Lamont was first elected in 2018 and has proudly fought to ensure the health and safety of his constituents for the last four years. He previously served as Greenwich selectman from 1987 to 1989, and has always taken pride in Connecticut’s status as a champion of commonsense gun laws. In office, he has made it a top priority to defend and strengthen these laws, and he has worked tirelessly to improve public safety. In 2021, Governor Lamont passed critical legislation to strengthen Connecticut’s landmark extreme risk law. The updated legislation also allows seized weapons to be held in perpetuity, permits law enforcement to seize additional weapons, and prevents individuals under an active risk warrant from purchasing new firearms, closing various loopholes in the original law. Additionally, Governor Lamont worked across state lines to help institute an agreement with the governors of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania to share gun data between states in an effort to reduce crime across the region.
