Giffords Endorses Phil Weiser for Attorney General in Colorado
Washington DC — Today, Giffords PAC, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, announced its endorsement of Attorney General Phil Weiser for reelection in Colorado.
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
“Since he was first elected in 2018, Attorney General Phil Weiser has worked diligently to implement and enforce the types of commonsense reforms needed to keep Coloradans safe from senseless violence. He knows that Coloradans have seen too many tragedies impact their communities in recent years, and refuses to allow the progress made on this issue be rolled back. In office, he notably stepped up to defend his state’s extreme risk protection order law in court.
“In the wake of the Supreme Court’s dangerous decision in NYSRPA v. Bruen, it is clear that the fate of commonsense gun laws are on the ballot this fall. We must elect gun safety champions to office in November who will put community safety first and always work to ensure that state’s have the most effective laws on the books – and Attorney General Phil Weiser is exactly that kind of leader. With him leading the way in Colorado, I know that progress is possible.”
Attorney General Phil Weiser has dedicated his life to justice, public service, and the law. In recent years, Colorado has experienced some of the deadliest instances of gun violence in American history, and Attorney General Weiser has worked tirelessly to ensure that his constituents are protected from similar acts of senseless violence. In 2019, his state passed legislation that would allow a judge to issue an extreme risk protection order, which bans someone from possessing a firearm for up to 364 days if the court found that the individual posed a significant risk of causing harm to themselves or others. When it was challenged in court, Attorney General Weiser led the charge to defend this commonsense measure—protecting countless lives in the process. He also has worked to ensure that Coloradans knew about this process, so they could actively keep other potential violent instances from occurring. In doing so, Attorney General Weiser made clear that he understands that gun violence prevention works best as a coordinated effort, and in his current role, he has sought to develop strong partnerships with agencies across Colorado to help prevent suicide and gun violence.
