Giffords Lauds Rhode Island for Passing Critical Gun Safety Legislation

Washington DC Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, lauded Governor Daniel McKee, Speaker Joseph Shekarchi, and Senate President Dominick Ruggerio for responding to the tragic events in Buffalo and Uvalde by passing a critical package of bills that tighten Rhode Island’s gun laws and close loopholes available to those who seek to abuse them.

“This legislation is another step in making Rhode Island families safer in their own communities,” said Sean Holihan, Giffords State Legislative Director. “We are thankful for the leadership of the House and Senate bill sponsors and the work done by the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence to push these bills in the wake of Uvalde and Buffalo.”

This bill package includes legislation making it illegal to openly carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in public, banning high-capacity magazines that contain more than 10 rounds of ammunition and requiring those purchasing firearms or ammunition to be at least 21 years of age.
