Former Congresswoman Giffords Marks 10 Year Anniversary of Sandy Hook Shooting
Washington DC — Today, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords marked the 10 year anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
“Ten years ago today, the lives of 20 children and six adults were stolen in a horrific act of gun violence. The eyes of the nation turned to Sandy Hook, Connecticut, as dozens of families and an entire community faced the unimaginable task of grieving and moving ahead from this tragedy. Gun violence stole these futures and dreams from those who lost their lives 10 years ago today, just as it steals so much from so many.
”Yet I am inspired today and every day by the Newtown community. When I visited Newtown ten years ago, I mourned with the families of Sandy Hook. We were united in our anger, our devastation, and our determination to turn our pain into purpose and to keep fighting, no matter what. Over the past ten years, we have done that. Nothing will bring the beautiful souls that we lost that day back. One million people have been shot across the country since Sandy Hook. Nothing will undo that. But if the calls we make and gun safety champions we elect and laws we pass spare even one family from knowing this pain, it will have been worth it.
“I know that we can build a future free from gun violence, one where parents are not afraid to send their kids to school every day. This is not a fantasy untethered from reality; it is a possibility within our grasp if we are courageous enough to reach for it. We owe this to the children who should be 16 and 17 years old today, to their families, and to all those whose hearts are heavier today and every day because of the devastation wrought by gun violence. I’m standing with you, and I will never stop fighting for you.”
