GIFFORDS Statement on Denver East High School Shooting

Washington DC GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement today after a student shot two school administrators at East High School in Denver.

Victor Bencomo, GIFFORDS Gun Owner for Safety, Colorado Chapter:

“Our country is in crisis. No student or educator should have to fear being shot in school, but shootings like the one we experienced in Denver today are far too common. Gun violence is an epidemic and we’ve experienced far too much of it in Colorado. More than 1,000 people were killed by a firearm in 2021 in our state. The Colorado legislature is holding hearings today on commonsense gun safety measures that will help make our state safer for Coloradans. Many gun owners, like myself, support these important safety measures. It’s time for our leaders to act to prevent future tragedies like the one today.”

Lucy Sarkissian, GIFFORDS Courage Fellow:

“Schools should be a safe place; a place to learn, grow and make lifelong friends. But time and time again, our students and teachers have their lives forever changed by gun violence. Last month, a student was killed outside of East High School. This month, two school administrators were shot. Gun violence has taken its toll on far too many Colorado communities. It’s time for Colorado leaders to take meaningful action to protect our kids and neighbors from gun violence. We’re all watching.”
