GIFFORDS Demands Congress Stop Exempting Gun Industry from Product Safety Laws

Washington DC — Today GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released a statement demanding Congress repeal firearms manufacturers’ exemption from Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) oversight. A bombshell investigation in the Washington Post found faulty SIG Sauer P320 pistols injured more than 80 people without anyone pulling the trigger.

GIFFORDS Federal Affairs Director, Adzi Vokhiwa:
“More than 80 Americans have been victimized by defective SIG Sauer P320 pistols and there’s nothing the Consumer Product Safety Commission can do about it. Congress must immediately repeal the law exempting the gun industry from consumer safety laws to ensure bad actors in the industry don’t get away with marketing shoddy firearms that cost lives. If any industry has shown a willingness to endanger the public to pad its own profits, it’s the gun industry.”
