GIFFORDS Statement on Shootings at High School Football Games

Washington DC —GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement following at least 10 shootings occurred at high school football games just this month

Vanessa Gonzalez, Vice President of Government and Political Affairs:

“Growing up in Texas, the start of high school football was one of my favorite times of the year. Each August, communities across the country gather under the lights every Friday night to cheer on their local team. But this year, the familiar echoes of parents’ cheers and marching bands have been drowned out by the heart-stopping sounds of screams and gunshots.

“Parents deserve to send their child to see a ball game, watch a movie, or go shopping without fear that they will never come home. If we want high school football to remain a treasured American pastime, our leaders need to stand up and change the broken laws that make this terror possible. We know it doesn’t need to be like this because it never used to be like this. Parents like me will not let the gun lobby’s radical agenda ruin everything great about being a kid in America.”
