GIFFORDS applauds New Jersey for awarding $14.5M in funding for violence intervention and prevention work
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, applauded Governor Phil Murphy and Attorney General Matthew Platkin for delivering $14.5 million in investments for New Jersey’s Community-Based Violence Intervention (CBVI) Program.
This funding provides essential support to community organizations dedicated to breaking the cycle of violence across the state, a proven strategy to save lives. Programs under CBVI have played a key role in helping New Jersey reach historic lows in gun violence. GIFFORDS has been a strong advocate, alongside the New Jersey Violence Intervention and Prevention (NJVIP) Coalition, for investing in community violence intervention initiatives in New Jersey. GIFFORDS actively championed investments in community violence intervention programs in New Jersey, bringing the state’s total investment in these programs to nearly $130 million. This is among the highest individual state investments in the nation.
“New Jersey has set a powerful example in the fight against community violence and we applaud Governor Murphy and Attorney General Platkin for their sustained investment in solutions that save lives by addressing root causes,” said Jordan Costa, Senior Project Manager at GIFFORDS Center for Violence Intervention. “Year after year, these programs have reduced violence, restored our communities and offered hope in the face of tragedy. States can no longer afford the cost of inaction. It is time for leaders to step up, champion the power of these interventions, and commit to sustained, long-term investment.”
