Gabby Giffords honors victims and survivors two years after the Michigan State University shooting
WASHINGTON — Today, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of the gun violence prevention organization GIFFORDS, honored the memories of the three students who were shot and killed at Michigan State University (MSU) in 2023. Five others were injured in the attack.
“My heart is with the families who lost loved ones two years ago today, and with the survivors who are still navigating the aftermath of this horrible act,” said former Congresswoman Giffords. “Mass shootings like this one are tragedies that our communities and our lawmakers must refuse to tolerate.
“I am proud to say that I stood for change at the Michigan State Capitol with MSU students and other advocates in the wake of this tragedy, where Governor Whitmer signed into law crucial gun safety legislation. I promise to fight until no student is forced to suffer the pain and injustice of gun violence again.”
Months after the shooting, GIFFORDS worked with both legislators and advocates in Michigan to pass background checks on all gun sales, an extreme risk protection order law, and a safe storage law.
