GIFFORDS stands with community violence intervention groups on day of action

In April the Trump administration abruptly cut over $800 million in grants to gun violence prevention and crime reduction programs

WASHINGTON GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released a statement in support of the national day of action for community violence intervention groups. Last month, the Department of Justice abruptly rescinded more than $800 million in awarded public safety grants, including to violence intervention groups.  Learn more at protectcvi.com

“Community violence intervention workers are the heart of local safety efforts—they show up in the toughest moments, often risking their own lives to interrupt cycles of violence and build peace,” said Paul Carrillo, Vice President of the GIFFORDS Center for Violence Intervention. “These workers are already underpaid, overburdened, and too often overlooked. The Trump administration’s decision to gut this funding is not just cruel; it’s deadly. We stand with CVI workers and communities who will show up in Congress and in state legislatures today to communicate clearly that unless this funding is restored, lives will be lost, and the responsibility will rest squarely on those who turned their backs on our most impacted communities.”

GIFFORDS is tracking President Trump’s disastrous record on gun violence here. During President Trump’s first term, gun violence rose by 34%.
