Defeating harmful legislation backed by the gun lobby
Giffords brought together lawmakers, coalition partners, and stakeholders in Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and husband Mark Kelly’s home state to stop a number of dangerous bills backed by the gun lobby. By combining the advocacy efforts of the Giffords Arizona Coalition, formerly known as the Arizona Coalition for Common Sense, and other state partners, legislation that would have made Arizona communities less safe was defeated. The most extreme piece of legislation, the Firearms Compact Bill, proposed the formation of an illegal compact between states which would have ultimately prohibited Arizona from enacting safer firearms laws without the consent of all other member states. In addition, Giffords worked with partners to defeat an irresponsible bill that would have weakened Shannon’s Law by making it more difficult for law enforcement to prosecute those who illegally engage in celebratory gunfire, and a bill that would have infringed on the rights of Arizonans by holding small business owners and individuals who chose to prohibit guns on their premises liable for damages caused by a shooting. These proposed bills would have endangered Arizona communities and would have unfairly burdened small business owners. To highlight just how businesses, families, and the Arizona economy are impacted by gun violence, Giffords released the Arizona Cost of Gun Violence report. This report provides a snapshot of the type of costs that are incurred, both directly and indirectly, across the state when gun violence takes its toll. Giffords is also working with law enforcement to amplify their voice in these debates about gun violence and gun safety. Giffords worked with Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus to publish an op-ed, “Lawmakers must listen to law enforcement on dangerous gun bills,” in 2017 in the Arizona Daily Star.
