Removing firearms in times of crisis
Giffords and Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence gun safety experts Jenna Yuille and Allison Anderman testified in support of Extreme Risk Protection Order legislation, a bill that would help remove guns from dangerous situations by creating a court-ordered process that prohibits a person who is in danger of hurting themselves or others from possessing a firearm. Giffords experts have been advocating for this newer policy as a means to address suicide by firearms. Currently only four states in the country have similar laws but the initial research on the efficacy of this policy is promising. In the first 14 years of the implementation of Connecticut’s law, it is estimated that between 38-76 lives were saved due to their law.
The Giffords Law Center provides extensive, in-depth summaries of federal, state, and local firearm laws and policies. As the most comprehensive resource for information on United States gun laws, our experts at the Law Center research, write, defend, and enact the laws, policies, and programs proven to reduce gun violence and save lives.
