Advocating to make Minnesota communities safer from gun violence
In February 2016, Giffords launched the Giffords Minnesota Coalition, formerly known as the Minnesota Coalition for Common Sense. This coalition is made up of law enforcement, veterans, small business owners, and advocates who have come together to make Minnesotan communities safer. To highlight just how businesses, families, and the Minnesota economy are impacted by gun violence, Giffords released the Minnesota Cost of Gun Violence report. This report provides a snapshot of the type of costs that are incurred, both directly and indirectly, across the state when gun violence takes its toll.
Minnesota would also be impacted by a gun lobby-backed bill currently under consideration in Congress. This legislation, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, would force each state to accept the concealed carry laws of every other state, even if their standards for carrying a loaded, hidden gun in public are weaker. Giffords is working with Congressional leaders and Minnesota stakeholders to highlight the public safety risks Minnesota would face from federally mandated concealed carry reciprocity. These efforts are supported by recent polling released by Giffords that highlights strong opposition in Minnesota to the gun lobby’s dangerous agenda. For example, 86 percent of Minnesota voters support the existing concealed carry permitting system in Minnesota, and 81 percent of voters strongly support the existing system that regulates the sale of firearm silencers. These findings are just the latest example of Minnesotans support for stronger gun laws. In 2016, a similar survey of Minnesota voters conducted on behalf of Giffords found that 86 percent of Minnesota voters – including 77 percent of Republican voters – support closing the loopholes in current law that allow dangerous people like felons and domestic abusers buy guns without a background check.
