Continuing efforts to pass life-saving legislation
Giffords is working with legislators and local leaders in support of Extreme Risk Protection Order legislation. This bill would help remove guns from dangerous situations by creating a court-ordered process that temporarily prohibits a person from possessing a firearm who may be in danger of hurting themselves or others. Giffords also joined New York legislators in Albany earlier this year at a press conference in support of this bill, as well as a hate crimes bill which will help keep violent hate crime offenders from possessing guns, and legislation that would outline a firearms surrender process for domestic abusers.
New Yorkers would also be impacted by a gun lobby-backed bill currently under consideration in Congress. This legislation, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, would force each state to accept the concealed carry laws of every other state, even if their standards for carrying a loaded, hidden gun in public are weaker. Giffords is working with Congressional leaders and New York stakeholders to highlight the public safety risks New York would face from federally mandated concealed carry reciprocity.
In 2013, Congresswoman Giffords and Captain Kelly traveled to the Empire State in support of New York’s Model Gun Show Procedures. Developed by the Attorney General’s office, these new agreements help ensure that background checks are now conducted on virtually every firearm sold at a gun show in New York State.
