Opposing harmful legislation backed by the gun lobby
Giffords and members of the Giffords Ohio Coalition, formerly known as the Ohio Coalition for Common Sense, oppose HB 233, a dangerous bill backed by the gun lobby that decriminalizes carrying a firearm in many public places, including bars, courthouses, airport terminals, university and college campuses and even school safety zones. Members of the Giffords Ohio Coalition have testified in opposition to several gun bills moving through the Ohio legislature in 2017. Giffords also opposed a harmful guns everywhere bill which was signed into law in December 2016. This dangerous new law allows loaded, concealed handguns to be carried in public spaces like college campuses, libraries, and daycares. To highlight just how businesses, families, and the Ohio economy are impacted by gun violence, Giffords released the Ohio Cost of Gun Violence report. This report provides a snapshot of the type of costs that are incurred, both directly and indirectly, across the state when gun violence takes its toll.
Ohioans would also be impacted by a gun lobby-backed bill currently under consideration in Congress. This legislation, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, would force each state to accept the concealed carry laws of every other state, even if their standards for carrying a loaded, hidden gun in public are weaker. Giffords is working with Congressional leaders and Michigan stakeholders to highlight the public safety risks Ohio would face from federally mandated concealed carry reciprocity.
