Opposing harmful legislation backed by the gun lobby
Giffords opposes a gun lobby-backed bill that would allow school personnel to carry loaded firearms in schools. If passed, this legislation would allow the board of school directors in a public K-12 school district to establish policies that would allow school personnel access to firearms in the buildings or on the grounds of a school. The bill also states that the identity of specific school personnel who are permitted to access firearms may not be disclosed at open meetings and are not subject to a separate “right-to-know” law. Giffords also opposes legislation which would allow the gun lobby to threaten lawsuits against cities and municipalities who pass responsible gun safety laws. This type of policy, known as preemption, has effectively allowed the gun lobby to prohibit municipalities from enacting gun laws that make sense for their communities.
Pennsylvanians would also be impacted by a gun lobby-backed bill currently under consideration in Congress. This legislation, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, would force each state to accept the concealed carry laws of every other state, even if their standards for carrying a loaded, hidden gun in public are weaker. Giffords is working with Congressional leaders and Pennsylvania stakeholders to highlight the public safety risks Pennsylvania would face from federally mandated concealed carry reciprocity. Giffords is also working with law enforcement to amplify their voice in these debates about gun violence and gun safety. Giffords worked with Retired Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey to publish an op-ed, Lawmakers must have the courage to oppose concealed-carry proposal, in 2017 in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
