Where to Find Giffords at the Democratic National Convention
The Democratic National Convention kicks-off on Monday, and while the pandemic has forced it to move to mostly virtual, Giffords will be there in full force. We’re excited to add our voice in support of the strongest gun safety ticket in history: Joe Biden for president and Kamala Harris for vice president. Both of these candidates have made lifesaving, commonsense gun safety a priority (read our coverage of Joe Biden’s and Kamala Harris’s gun safety platforms), which is why we’re so committed to helping them win in November.
The Democratic party understands the importance of gun safety to voters and is making this issue a core part of the convention. Giffords is excited to participate in a number of events that we hope you’ll join us for. We’re especially thrilled that our co-founder, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, will be speaking in primetime on Wednesday night.
Here’s more information on all the other events we’re doing over the course of the convention:
- Gun Safety & the Courts Panel, Tuesday, August 18 at 2:30 pm ET: As part of official daytime programming for the convention, Giffords will participate in a discussion on the importance of this election to the US courts system. We will highlight Trump’s dangerous record on judicial appointments in relation to gun safety laws and discuss the impact the courts will have on gun safety for generations to come. Giffords Law Center Litigation Director Hannah Shearer will be joined by Attorneys General Xavier Becerra and Phil Weiser for this important conversation.
- Gun Violence Prevention Roundtable, Wednesday, August 19 at 9:30 am ET: Senator Chris Murphy will lead a conversation with Giffords and our partners Everytown and Brady on gun violence prevention, with a focus on why it’s an important issue in races up and down the ballot this year. We’ll also be sharing insights from our research on how Trump’s extreme gun views hurt him with voters.
- Addressing Everyday Gun Violence Roundtable, Wednesday, August 19 at 5 pm ET: Rep. Lucy McBath will lead a roundtable discussion on the impact of gun violence on communities across the country and some of the evidence-based solutions that are needed to comprehensively address gun violence. Government Affairs Director Nico Bocour will represent Giffords in the discussion, where she will be joined by leaders from other gun violence prevention groups.
- Gabby Giffords in Primetime, Wednesday, August 19 at 9 pm ET: Our fearless, inspirational leader will be one of the featured speakers on the third night of the convention. She’ll be sharing the night with vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris, as well as Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and President Barack Obama. Gabby will be talking about her gun safety advocacy and why she supports Joe Biden for president. This is must-watch TV!
Throughout the convention, Giffords will be sharing content on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, and Gabby will be sharing special content as well. Be sure to follow along and engage with us as we do all that we can to elect a gun safety president in 2020.
