Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is a physician, public health expert, and community leader who has built a career fighting for Michigan. In every role, he’s leveraged his training as an epidemiologist to address public health challenges—from his time serving as the executive director of the Detroit Health Department, to his work as health officer for the City of Detroit, and during his tenure as director of Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human & Veterans Services. In each capacity, Dr. El-Sayed has proven himself to be a public servant who is committed to getting results. Now, he is running for US Senate to bring that same fighting spirit to Washington DC.
At Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human & Veterans Services, Dr. El-Sayed served 1.8 million Michiganders in the state’s largest and most diverse county and led a restructuring of the county’s juvenile detention facility, partnering with local community organizations to invest in community violence intervention programs for youth and families. As an epidemiologist, Dr. El-Sayed understands the importance of addressing gun violence as a public health crisis, which demands evidence-based federal solutions like universal background checks, extreme risk laws, and waiting periods on gun sales. He’ll also champion strong measures around safe firearms storage, advocate for voluntary gun buybacks, and push for expanded mental health care for everyone touched by gun violence, especially in the communities hit hardest by daily shootings and suicide. In DC, he also plans to fight the gun lobby and hold the gun industry to the same standards of accountability as any other consumer product industry—even pushing for a 10% tax on guns and ammunition to fund violence prevention, mental health care, and gun violence prevention research.
Dr. El-Sayed pursued a career in medicine because he wanted to save lives—and as a public servant, he is still driven by that same mission. The US Senate race in Michigan is set to be one of the closest in the country this November, and the choice facing voters could not be more clear. With so much on the line, it is critical that Michigan, which has seen far too much senseless violence in recent years, from daily community violence to the shootings at Oxford High School and Michigan State University, is represented by a leader who will champion lifesaving gun safety policies and won’t back down to the gun lobby. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is equal parts fighter and public servant, making him a perfect fit to represent the people of Great Lakes State in Washington DC.
