Dr. Adam Hamawy has spent his career treating victims of gun violence, in emergency rooms in New Jersey and in war zones around the world. After earning an ROTC scholarship to pay for his education at Rutgers, Dr. Hamawy joined the New Jersey Army National Guard and worked his way through Rutgers Medical School. While in residency, he treated victims and other first responders in a field hospital at Ground Zero on 9/11. He later rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Army and served as a combat trauma surgeon in Iraq. Now, Dr. Hamawy is running for Congress as a peace advocate, both abroad and at home. He has seen the toll that violence takes on communities and on patients, and he is committed to building a safer future where no American lives in fear of gun violence.
As a physician, Dr. Hamawy knows that gun violence is a public health crisis—and like many public health issues, the effects of gun violence are often felt most acutely in vulnerable communities. For him, this issue is also personal. Dr. Hamawy had family members present during the May 2026 shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, where three people were killed. He knows that no one should live in fear of hate crimes, especially not in a house of worship, and is deeply committed to holding federal agencies accountable for their reckless practices that put Americans in danger and stoke fear in communities around the country. As a veteran, he also believes that Congress must act to make sure that the weapons he has seen in war are not causing needless deaths here at home.
Dr. Hamawy has the bravery of a soldier, the knowledge of a physician, and the heart of a public servant. His career has prepared him to serve in the US House as an advocate to end violence and promote safer futures. This fall, the voters of New Jersey’s Twelfth Congressional District have the opportunity in Dr. Adam Hamawy to elect a champion who will bring courage to Congress and make life better for American families.
