Senator Amy Klobuchar has been one of our country’s foremost champions for commonsense gun safety legislation for years, and countless American lives have been saved by her fierce leadership on this issue. Born and raised in a state with a tradition of responsible gun ownership, she understands that Second Amendment rights need to be balanced with measures to keep firearms away from dangerous people—and she’s determined to do everything in her power to keep Minnesotans safe from harm.
Prior to her service on Capitol Hill, Senator Klobuchar served as Hennepin county attorney, where she was on the front lines of prosecuting gun crimes and working with local partners to reduce and prevent violence in her state’s largest county. In Washington DC, Senator Klobuchar has continued these efforts as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, where she’s led critical legislation to close the “boyfriend loophole” and prevent abusive dating partners convicted of domestic violence from purchasing guns—an important measure that was included in the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. This lifesaving legislative package, which Senator Klobuchar helped craft with colleagues on both sides of the aisle in 2022, also strengthened background checks for people under 21 years old, cracked down on illegal straw purchases, expanded investments in mental health services, and provided support to states to implement extreme risk laws.
Like so many in this movement, Senator Klobuchar knows that while we’ve made important progress in the fight to save lives, there remains so much more to do to build a safer future for the next generation. That’s why she currently leads legislation to address the proliferation of deadly gun conversion devices, which can turn semiautomatic handguns into fully automatic weapons, and she has cosponsored legislation to ban military-style assault weapons and bump stock devices that can dramatically increase a semiautomatic rifle’s rate of fire. Senator Klobuchar has also proven herself as a top gun safety champion by leading bipartisanamicus briefs to the Supreme Court, like the one she filed in United States v. Rahimi arguing the importance of commonsense laws that limit the ability of domestic abusers to access firearms.
It’s clear that Senator Amy Klobuchar is not slowing down in her fight for safer communities—and we’re excited to support her in her bid to take that fight back home and lead her state as Minnesota’s next governor.
