Born and raised in New Jersey, Congresswoman Analilia Mejia is the daughter of Colombian and Dominican immigrants who taught her that no one makes it alone. She grew up watching her mother, a seamstress, work multiple jobs and still struggle to put food on the table, and it’s her example of hard work that inspired Congresswoman Mejia to launch her own fight for families and strive to create a better world for the next generation. In every role she’s had—from serving as the national political director for Senator Bernie Sanders’s 2020 presidential campaign, to working in the Department of Labor under President Joe Biden, to her time as co-executive director of Popular Democracy, and now as New Jersey’s Eleventh District’s voice in Congress—she’s worked to tackle some of the toughest issues impacting her community head on, including our nation’s epidemic of gun violence.
In Washington DC, Congresswoman Mejia has been a consummate advocate for lifesaving measures that reduce crime and keep our communities safe from senseless shootings. As a mother, she knows the fear many parents feel when they hear about yet another school shooting and she’s acutely aware that the easy access to firearms, legally or otherwise, has made our communities less safe. Throughout her tenure in office, she’s pushed to limit access to weapons of war that have flooded our nation’s streets, strengthen background checks, support survivors of gun violence, regulate dangerous ghost guns, strengthen safe storage requirements, and take steps to support lifesaving community-based intervention programs that are proven to interrupt cycles of violence.
Now more than ever, we need to reelect proven champions in the fight for a better future who will never tire in pushing to create safer spaces for every member of our communities—leaders like Congresswoman Analilia Mejia. As part of a new generation of leaders looking to take on the gun lobby and break their grip on Congress in a new gun safety majority, we know that she will always put the well-being of her constituents first.
