Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks was taught from a young age to care for her neighbors and give back to her community, urged on by the words of her great-grandmother not to sit on the sidelines but to “go farther and do better.” Today, she’s putting those words into action by working to curb senseless gun violence across Maryland and create a safer future for the next generation.
Throughout her career, County Executive Alsobrooks has personally witnessed the devastating effects of gun violence and the immense pain and destruction it has inflicted on too many communities in her state. As a former prosecutor and the top law enforcement officer of Prince George’s County, she worked to take on crime and prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands, while still treating victims and the accused with dignity and respect. Because of her leadership, violent crime dropped by 50%—and as county executive, she has continued to root out gun violence by making key investments in desperately needed violence intervention programs which provide lifesaving opportunities for young people.
As a mother, County Executive Alsobrooks knows that we must do more to keep our children out of harm’s way. Like so many in this movement, she is frustrated by the lack of action on gun safety from our leaders in Washington DC, and if elected to the US Senate, she’ll be a determined champion. We know she’ll fight for universal background checks and measures to close the gun show loophole, ban the sale of military-style weapons and devices like bump stocks, reign in the undue legal protections enjoyed by the corporate gun lobby, and implement critically important red flag laws to disarm domestic abusers and those exhibiting signs of wanting to harm themselves or others.
With the fate of our gun safety majority in the US Senate on the line this fall, it’s imperative that Maryland voters send County Executive Angela Alsobrooks to Capitol Hill to advocate on their behalf. With her helping lead the way on this issue as a part of a new generation of gun safety champions, we know that a safer future is within reach.
