From his early experiences as a housing advocate and a tenant organizer to working as New York City’s comptroller, Lander has a track record of delivering real results for his neighbors. As comptroller, he served as NYC’s chief financial and accountability officer, uncovering waste and abuse and saving hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars. Now, Lander is running for Congress to fight against government corruption and take on the corporate interests who have rigged our economy against working people. As part of a new gun safety majority in the US House, Lander will stand up to the gun lobby that prioritizes profits over people.
During his time as New York City comptroller, Lander joined forces with gun safety advocates to call on major credit card companies to adopt a merchant category code for ammunition and firearm stores. The code was established in August 2022, allowing financial institutions to better track and report suspicious gun purchases to law enforcement. He also released a report regarding community violence intervention, finding that the programs reduced shooting incidence by 21% between 2012 and 2024. Based on the report’s findings, Lander advocated for critical improvements to the program—including stronger oversight, data transparency, and proper compensation for providers—to continue preventing violence at the community level.
Throughout his career, Lander has been called one of the hardest-working and most effective public servants in New York City.
