For Representative Brad Schneider, the fight to end gun violence is deeply personal. He carries the responsibility of being named after his great uncle, who was murdered by a gunman before the congressman’s birth—and throughout his time in public service, Representative Schneider has remained committed to honoring his legacy by working to protect families across Northern Illinois. That commitment became even more urgent in 2022, when his community experienced the devastating Highland Park Fourth of July parade shooting that claimed seven lives and injured dozens more. Representative Schneider was on his way to the parade when the attack unfolded, and in the years since, he has stood alongside survivors, families, first responders, and community leaders to fight for the commonsense reforms needed to help prevent future tragedies.

In office, Representative Schneider has worked tirelessly to strengthen America’s gun laws and push back against the gun lobby’s dangerous agenda. Knowing that children in schools across Illinois have to deal with the daily trauma of fearing gun violence may impact their classrooms, Representative Schneider authored the bipartisan Securing Our Schools (SOS) Act, which authorized the Department of Justice to offer grants to school districts to buy alert buttons for classrooms and was signed into law in 2018. These SOS buttons notify law enforcement immediately in the event of an emergency to better protect students, teachers, and faculty. Representative Schneider has also helped reintroduce legislation to ban large-capacity magazines and championed the SECURE Firearm Storage Act, which would require all firearms to be securely stored when a federally licensed gun dealer is not open for business, to prevent smash-and-grab gun store burglaries. He also proudly voted for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major federal gun safety legislation enacted in nearly three decades. Following the Highland Park shooting, he has continued to honor those whose lives were lost by introducing an annual congressional resolution recognizing the victims while continuing to advocate for the lifesaving reforms they deserve.

He has never wavered in his commitment to preventing gun violence, supporting survivors, and advancing commonsense policies that save lives.
