Cheri Beasley has spent her life in service to the people of North Carolina. From the very start of her career, she worked to give back to her community by standing up for its most vulnerable as a public defender in Fayetteville. In 2008, Beasley took the next step in her service to the state, winning election to the North Carolina Court of Appeals by a commanding 15-point margin of victory. Throughout her time as a judge, Beasley worked to keep communities safe, uphold the rule of law, and protect the constitutional rights of North Carolinians. In the courtroom, she saw the way laws impact and fail everyday people, and in her own life as a working mom, she’s grappled with many of the same challenges families across the state face—including how to keep her loved ones safe from rising levels of violence.
Seeing these problems firsthand compelled Beasley to serve at a higher level. In 2014, she was elected to be an associate justice of the state Supreme Court, overcoming a Republican wave that flipped Democratic-held seats in North Carolina and states across the country. However, Beasley didn’t stop there—she made history again in 2019 by becoming the first African American woman to serve as chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.
If elected to the Senate, Beasley will once again break a historic barrier as the first African American woman to serve as a US senator for North Carolina. In her, we will also have a champion who believes that we must keep our children and communities safe by implementing commonsense gun safety measures like universal background checks, encouraging safe firearm storage, and closing loopholes to prevent those who have committed domestic violence from being able to obtain a gun. Beasley will also work to stop the plague of mass shootings across our communities by keeping combat-style weapons and high-capacity magazines off our streets and away from our schools. Now more than ever, with our gun safety majority in the Senate on the line, we need leaders like Cheri Beasley in Washington.
