Senator Chris Coons is a pragmatic and principled leader who has spent his career working to find commonsense solutions to some of our nation’s toughest challenges. Raised in Delaware, Senator Coons earned degrees from Yale Law School and Yale Divinity School before serving his community in New Castle County government and later representing Delaware in the United States Senate. Throughout his time in office, Senator Coons has brought a thoughtful, bipartisan approach to public safety, recognizing that protecting communities from gun violence and respecting the rights of responsible gun owners must go hand in hand.

That approach has made Senator Coons a leading advocate for practical, bipartisan gun safety solutions. He authored the NICS Denial Notification Act, which was signed into law and requires federal authorities to notify state and local law enforcement whenever someone prohibited from purchasing a firearm attempts to buy one and fails a background check. Senator Coons also helped pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—the first major federal gun safety legislation enacted in nearly three decades, and has consistently supported universal background checks and other commonsense measures that keep firearms out of dangerous hands. As co-chair of the Senate Law Enforcement Caucus, he has convened law enforcement leaders, community organizations, and families to share best practices and develop strategies that reduce gun violence while strengthening public safety.

Senator Chris Coons understands that ending America’s gun violence epidemic requires partnership, persistence, and the courage to act. He has consistently worked to bridge divides, support law enforcement, and advance policies that prevent violence before it occurs.
