Raised by a single mother who taught him the importance of hard work and standing up for what’s right, Christian Mitchell has made it his mission to fight for a fairer and more equitable Illinois, where every child has access to a better future. His career has always been driven by a desire to give back to others and a need to protect our communities, from serving in the Illinois Air National Guard to working as a state representative and as Governor JB Pritzker’s deputy governor of environment, infrastructure, and public safety. And as his state’s next lieutenant governor, Mitchell will continue this work statewide as he helps lead the effort to save lives from senseless gun violence across the Prairie State.
In each of his prior roles, Mitchell has made ending America’s epidemic of gun violence a top priority. Like so many in this movement, he knows it’s unacceptable that innocent people fear for their lives while going to work, school, church, or even a grocery store. While serving as a state representative, Mitchell identified gun violence as the biggest public health problem affecting Illinois—much of which is driven by a dangerous flow of firearms into the state from surrounding areas with weak gun laws—and he formed the Illinois Gun Trafficking Task Force to develop comprehensive legislative solutions that would stem the cycles of violence and crime plaguing communities from Chicago to the Metro East. As a deputy governor under Governor Pritzker, Mitchell also continued this lifesaving work as the policy and legislative lead on the Illinois’s landmark assault weapons ban following the Highland Park massacre and as one of the key voices statewide that helped expedite the implementation of universal background checks.
The choice Illinois voters face at the ballot box this fall is clear—and it’s imperative they send leaders like Christian Mitchell to Springfield, who will always put their safety first and fight to keep the Land of Lincoln moving in the right direction. As Illinois’s next lieutenant governor, we know a safer future is within reach.
