Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has spent his entire career fighting for the safety of New Yorkers. Now, as the top Democrat in the United States Senate, he’s ushering in a new era of bold change to counteract America’s epidemic of gun violence.
Throughout his career, Leader Schumer has never wavered in his support of commonsense gun safety policies. As a member of the House of Representatives, Leader Schumer wrote the original bill requiring background checks on gun sales from federally licensed dealers and manufacturers. While this legislation has blocked 3.5 million gun sales from prohibited purchasers, Leader Schumer knows that we still need to do more to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of those seeking to do harm—especially those who commit domestic violence. Under his leadership, Democrats and Republicans in the Senate came together to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, which will provide added protection to the nearly 4.5 million women across the United States that are threatened with a gun by an intimate partner annually.
In recent years, New York and cities across the country have seen an alarming rise in the number of deadly weapons flooding their streets. These include assault weapons and ghost guns, a category of dangerous firearms with no serial number or way for law enforcement agencies to track their origin. In Washington DC, Leader Schumer has frequently called on federal agencies to update their regulations so people purchasing parts of ghost guns will be subject to a federal background check—a change that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) announced would be implemented in 2022. Leader Schumer also helped write and pass the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, which outlawed the manufacture and importation of semi-automatic weapons. While the original ban expired in 2004, Leader Schumer has been a leading voice in the push to reauthorize this legislation following tragedies like the mass shootings in Parkland, Newtown, and Uvalde.
In 2022, Leader Schumer helped make history as a lead negotiator of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—the first gun safety legislation to be signed into law in nearly 30 years. This landmark legislation helps states enact and implement extreme risk protection order laws, funds community violence intervention programs, and addresses the scourge of gun trafficking. While it’s a step in the right direction, there is still so much more to do to keep New Yorkers safe. This fall, voters must mobilize like never before to send Majority Leader Chuck Schumer back to Washington DC, where he will continue to guide his caucus in the important work of saving lives. With him leading the charge, we know that a brighter future is possible.
