Delegate Cliff Hayes knows that we owe it to our children to tackle the epidemic of gun violence plaguing communities across Virginia. Having seen that far too many families have been torn apart by accidental shootings, Delegate Hayes successfully led the fight to pass critical legislation to prohibit adults from recklessly leaving a loaded, unsecured firearm in the presence of a minor during the 2020 general assembly session. After a catastrophic mass shooting at a local Walmart rocked his own community in Chesapeake, Delegate Hayes took swift action to honor the lives lost by introducing legislation to create a 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases across the Commonwealth. While this bill died in a House Public Safety Subcommittee along party lines, Delegate Hayes remains committed to seeing it through until it’s signed into law, so that no community is forced to feel the pain his own did. This fall, it’s imperative that we flip the House of Delegates so that meaningful bills like this are no longer subject to Republican stonewalling—and that starts with reelecting Delegate Cliff Hayes. With him leading the charge, we know that a safer Virginia for all is possible.
