For former Representative Colin Allred, the fight to end gun violence is deeply personal. Born and raised in North Dallas, Colin attended public schools where he walked through a metal detector every morning, and by the age of 16, he had already lost three friends to senseless acts of gun violence. Like so many in this movement, Representative Allred channeled his anger and energy into action and became a civil rights attorney before running for Congress in 2018—where he went on to beat an entrenched 11-term Republican incumbent and join a historic freshman class that helped flip the House blue and began to make real progress on gun safety. Now, after six years representing North Texas, he is running to continue that work in Texas’s Thirty-Third Congressional District—the community that helped shape him and where he and his wife Aly are now raising their two sons.
Throughout his time in Congress, Representative Allred has been a steadfast advocate for commonsense gun safety measures that protect communities while respecting the rights of responsible gun owners. As a father, he believes it is unacceptable that parents across Texas are forced to worry whether their children will come home safely from school. That’s why he has worked to close loopholes that allow domestic abusers to access firearms, strengthen universal background checks, support extreme risk protection orders, and advance safe storage measures that help prevent tragedy before it occurs. He also helped secure the first federal funding for gun violence research in decades and played a key role in passing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant federal gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years. Representative Allred understands that Texans are tired of being told that mass shootings and everyday gun violence are simply facts of life, and he remains committed to pursuing solutions that save lives.
Representative Allred is the solutions-oriented legislator North Texans need fighting on their behalf every day on Capitol Hill. He has spent his career bringing people together, tackling difficult challenges, and putting the interests of Texans ahead of partisan politics. As he seeks to return to the House, we know Representative Colin Allred will continue fighting for safer communities, stronger schools, and a future where every child has the opportunity to grow up free from the fear of gun violence.
