Former Interior Secretary and Congresswoman Deb Haaland has lived a life marked by challenges, but like so many New Mexicans, struggle made her fierce and her resilience enabled her to build a remarkable career in public service. As one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress and as the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary, she’s no stranger to making history—and as her state’s next governor, she’ll never lose focus on what counts the most to her constituents. Every day, Secretary Haaland will work tirelessly to deliver real results that improve the lives of every New Mexicans and tackle some of the toughest issues facing families across the Land of Enchantment, like our epidemic of senseless gun violence.
Throughout her career, Secretary Haaland has always made it a point to advocate for comprehensive, lifesaving gun safety laws at both the state and federal level because she knows they’re instrumental to saving lives. As a congresswoman, she voted for the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and the Enhanced Background Checks Act, and supported safe gun storage requirements and measures that would close domestic violence loopholes. During her first term in the House, Secretary Haaland also helped secure landmark funding for research on gun violence prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As governor, Secretary Haaland will continue to support law enforcement by providing them with the tools and technology they need, and fiercely promote gun safety by fighting to pass the Stop Illegal Gun Trade Act and recruiting community mentors to develop strategies to prevent illegal guns from entering New Mexico schools. She’s also determined to establish an Office of Gun Violence Prevention in New Mexico to address the root causes of gun violence, and to conduct outreach to minors whose social media posts indicate a risk for gun crimes.
With so much chaos coming out of Washington DC, it’s imperative that voters across the country elect gun safety champions who are ready to stand up to Trump and the gun lobby. Secretary Deb Haaland has always met that charge, and with her at the helm of her state starting in 2027, we know a brighter, safer future will be possible for every New Mexican.
