Representative Debbie Dingell has been a strong advocate for gun violence prevention efforts for years. Having grown up in a home with a father who used guns to intimidate and abuse her family, Representative Dingell acutely understands the pain and trauma our nation’s weak gun laws cause women and children every single day.

In Congress, she’s fought vigorously to close the dating partner loophole, which allows those who commit domestic abuse to obtain dangerous weapons. In 2022, Representative Dingell was also a vocal supporter for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first comprehensive gun safety bill to be signed into law in nearly 30 years. This legislation addressed the kinds of glaring loopholes in our law that consistently put survivors of abuse at risk, while also providing states with needed funding to implement extreme risk laws and bolster community violence intervention programs. Representative Dingell knows that other commonsense solutions, like expanding background checks to all gun sales, are needed to keep our communities safe from senseless violence, and she’s never let the harsh rhetoric of the gun lobby sway her from her commitment to doing the right thing. In fact, she’s even taken on the industry directly by introducing legislation like the Defective Firearms Protection Act, which ensures that gun manufacturers can’t escape liability for defective weapons. 

Now more than ever, we need representatives in Congress who can speak to the real life experiences of survivors and who will never stop fighting to pass stronger gun safety measures. Representative Debbie Dingell is exactly that champion—and Michiganders must send her back to Washington DC.
