Representative Deborah Ross is no stranger to public service, and she has always been committed to advancing the fight for fairness and justice. As a civil rights lawyer and a lecturer at Duke Law School, she worked to open the eyes of her students to inequality and to chart a path towards a brighter future. In 2002, she won a seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives, where she served her constituents for more than 10 years—including several terms as both majority and minority whip. In the state legislature, Representative Ross garnered a reputation as a strong gun safety advocate by supporting bills that would have required reporting on lost or stolen handguns and consistently voting against legislation that would have allowed concealed handguns in public spaces.
In 2020, Representative Ross took another step forward in her pursuit of justice by becoming the first Democrat in over a decade to be elected to represent North Carolina’s Second District in Congress. She serves as a member of the House Judiciary Committee, where she’s been a key partner in passing commonsense gun laws that will save American lives and keep communities across North Carolina safe. In her first year in Congress, she proudly cosponsored both the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and the Enhanced Background Checks Act, which will help to ensure that individuals already prohibited from gun possession are not able to obtain firearms. She supports legislation that would incentivize states to pass extreme risk protection order laws and mandate the safe storage of firearms in situations where children are present. In 2022, she also joined colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major gun safety legislation signed into law in nearly 30 years.
North Carolina is a key swing state this fall, and voters must do everything in their power to ensure that gun safety champions like Representative Deborah Ross are sent back to Congress in November. We know that with her in Washington DC, North Carolinans will always have a fighter representing them who will stop at nothing until America’s epidemic of gun violence is brought to heel.
