US House
Michigan
— 13th District Democrat
Open Seat2026
State Representative Donavan McKinney is a lifelong Detroiter and a devoted father of two young children who was first taught the importance of community, leadership, and service by his grandmother. Driven to fight for hardworking families like his own, Representative McKinney previously led coalition work with SEIU Healthcare Michigan and now serves the voice of his community in the legislature as a state representative. His firsthand experience living the problems many of his neighbors face has led Representative McKinney to fight to find solutions to some of the most pressing issues of the day—including our epidemic of gun violence.
For Representative McKinney, working to end gun violence is deeply personal. In high school, he attended 14 funerals for friends and family lost to gun violence. One of his core memories is coming home from school to find his mother crying at the kitchen table, having received a call minutes earlier that another young Black kid had been killed. When she grabbed him by his school uniform and told him he had to live, the trajectory of Representative McKiney’s life was changed forever. In the state house, he’s used these experiences as fuel and become one of Michigan’s foremost gun safety champions. He’s delivered more than $10 million in community violence intervention programs to Detroit and other areas and voted to pass lifesaving policies like background checks, red flag laws, and strong safe storage measures that have already proven to be effective in keeping Michiganders safe. In Congress, he’ll work to implement those same policies nationwide and create a better future for every American family.
For years, Michiganders have been subject to too many tragic instances of gun violence. Now more than ever, residents of the Great Lakes State need strong voices in DC that are in their corner and fighting for real action every day—starting with champions like Representative Donavan McKinney. With him leading the way on community safety, we know a better future free from violence will be within reach for countless families.
